EMDR Therapy in Surrey, BC
Evidence-based trauma therapy that helps you process the past so it no longer runs the present.
Some experiences don't just stay in the past. They show up in your body, your relationships, and the way you move through the world — long after the event itself is over.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is one of the most researched and effective therapies available for trauma, PTSD, and anxiety. At Praxis Wellness, EMDR is offered by a Registered Clinical Counsellor with over 10,000 hours of clinical experience — in a space that is trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and entirely at your pace.

What Is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a structured, evidence-based therapy developed to help people heal from the lasting effects of distressing or traumatic experiences.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require you to describe your experiences in detail. Instead, it works by helping your brain reprocess stored memories — reducing their emotional charge so they no longer feel as overwhelming or intrusive.
EMDR is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO), Health Canada, and numerous clinical bodies as an effective treatment for PTSD and trauma.
What EMDR can help with:
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Complex trauma and childhood experiences
Anxiety, panic, and intrusive thoughts
Grief and loss
Phobias and performance anxiety
Low self-worth rooted in past experiences
Intergenerational and cultural trauma
What to Expect in an EMDR Session
EMDR therapy follows a structured eight-phase process. Sessions at Praxis Wellness are paced carefully, so nothing moves faster than you are ready for.
Phase 1 — History and Assessment
We begin by understanding your history, your goals, and the experiences you'd like to work through. There is no pressure to share everything at once.
Phase 2 — Preparation
Before any processing begins, you'll be equipped with grounding and stabilization tools — so you always have a way to feel safe during and between sessions.
Phases 3–6 — Processing.
Using bilateral stimulation (typically guided eye movements or tapping), we work through specific memories or experiences. This helps the brain reprocess what it has been holding, reducing the distress attached to those memories over time.
Phases 7–8 — Closure and Review.
Each session ends with grounding, and progress is reviewed regularly to ensure the work is having the intended effect.
Most clients notice a meaningful shift within several sessions, though the number of sessions varies depending on the complexity of what is being addressed.

Common Questions About EMDR
Is EMDR safe?Yes. EMDR is a well-researched, evidence-based therapy with a strong safety record. Sessions are structured to ensure you are never overwhelmed — preparation and grounding are built into the process before any processing begins.
Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail? No. One of the key advantages of EMDR is that it does not require you to verbally recount your experiences in detail. The processing happens through bilateral stimulation, not through extended narration.
Can EMDR be done virtually?Yes. EMDR can be delivered effectively via secure video sessions. Many clients across BC access EMDR therapy at Praxis Wellness entirely online.
How many sessions will I need? This varies depending on the nature and complexity of what you are working through. Some clients experience significant relief in as few as 6–12 sessions. Others with more complex histories may benefit from longer-term work. This is always discussed openly and revisited as therapy progresses.
Is EMDR covered by insurance?Sessions with a Registered Clinical Counsellor are covered by most extended health benefit plans in BC. Direct billing is available for most plans. Payment is also accepted via e-transfer or credit card. If cost is a concern, sliding scale options are available — just mention it when you reach out.
